Metacognitive analysis
Working on this entry about SFL, it made me realize that the concept of Genre was almost never discussed in any of the subjects during my secondary education. Aside from the narrative structure, the conventions, structures and functions of other genres were never introduced and discussed, resulting in us being forced to write essays or lab reports with no model to compare with. In the case of English, the focus was always on grammatical rules and structures, or on meaningless vocabulary lists. A focus on genre and function could make learning English slightly easier, motivating, memorable than the regular structural approach. Although I still cannot fully grasp how to teach with this approach due to my inexperience, it is a challenge worth taking.
