Portfolio Entry #13: Abstracts

Academic Writing:

Abstracts

''An abstract is a brief summary of a research article, thesis, review, conference proceeding, or any in-depth analysis of a particular subject and is often used to help the reader quickly ascertain the paper's purpose.[1] When used, an abstract always appears at the beginning of a manuscript or typescript, acting as the point-of-entry for any given academic paper or patent application. Abstracting and indexing services for various academic disciplines are aimed at compiling a body of literature for that particular subject.''

Metacognitive Analysis

Every article I have read before had abstracts, but never did I take a moment to wonder what their actual purpose is. I had noticed differences in abstracts before: some were long, some were short, but I never wondered why. Now, I am more informed about it and I understand better the purpose of an abstract, and what to expect in one. I must confess, I made the mistake of thinking Introductions and Abstracts were the same, but now it is clear that they are not.

I will have to keep on learning more about Academic Writing, is such a shame I never got to opportunity to write an academic article during my high school years, not even in Spanish! It is a genre I will have to take into consideration when I take my own course, students should experience different genres for them to grow and learn.
